A Simple Mathematical Model of Exudative Retinal Detachment

Exudative retinal detachment is caused by a lack of understanding of the conditions that cause it, which makes surgery less effective. The detachment is heavily influenced by fluid dynamical effects. To investigate the interaction between the fluid flow and the detached retina, a simple mathematical model for exudative retinal detachment was created, in which the sensory retina is usually separated from the underlying retinal pigment epithelium without any retinal hole or tear. The model considers a typical retinal blister of unknown form, as well as the fluid flow induced by its accumulation in the subretinal space as a result of fluid leakage from the choriocapillaris across the outer blood retina barrier, as defined by Darcy’s law. The deformation of the retinal blister is modelled using the bending beams principle. The perturbation approach is used to solve the boundary value problem explaining retinal deformation in dimensionless form. The numerical findings for retinal deformation are graphed to show the sensitivity of the deformation to the elastic modulus, moment of inertia, and intraocular pressure, and are discussed.
