Advanced Studies on Surface Characterisation of Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Treated Cotton Fabric—Effect of Operation Parameters

February 25, 2021 Chemical Science 0

Plasma treatment can modify the surface characteristics of fibres and fabrics and this does not have much effect on the bulk properties of fibres and fabrics. The exact effect of plasma treatment, i.e. the change that it makes to the surface characteristics of the cloth, depends on the gas used in the treatment. The cotton fibre surface was modified by plasma atmospheric pressure treatment (APPT), using gas as the carrier. The effects of four operating parameter variations, discharge strength, oxygen flow rate, jet-to-substrate distance, and jet movement speed were examined. The surface morphology of cotton fabrics was investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy-Attenuated studied the elementary composition of the surface of the cloth. To analyze the functionality of the surface, Total Internal Reflectance (FTIR-ATR) was used. In this analysis, we revealed that after the surface characteristics of the cotton fibre, the operational parameters would be physical and chemical. Physically, after APPT, cracks and grooves were noted in the cotton fibre surface. The oxygen content on the surface of the cotton fibre was chemically increased after APPT. When the O/C ratio is taken into account, there was a steady effect of surface oxidation in the application of APPT for the treatment of cotton fiber in this study.
