An Attempt of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) for Combustor Modeling

A large eddy simulation (LES) attempt is made in a model combustor, and a number of critical issues such as grid size, incoming flow, wall boundary, physical sub-model, and result sampling are discussed. The computed results are compared to extensive experimental measurements, demonstrating that LES can reasonably predict the mean axial velocity and temperature distributions inside the combustion chamber. However, in order for LES to become an accurate and cost-effective tool for advanced combustion system development, some fundamental issues must be addressed, and additional validation studies are required. Furthermore, significant computing power is required to catch both. In actual turbulent combustion systems, flow motion occurs at low and high frequencies.
