Bitter Kola (Garcinia kola) as Herbal Remedy for Diabetes

February 12, 2021 Medicine and Medical Science 0

In herbal / African folk medicine, Bitter Kola (Garcinia kola) is highly valued because of its varied and numerous social, economic and medicinal uses, making it an important ingredient in African medicine. The research reviews some related literature on the diabetes impact of bitter kola. Medicinal plants such as Bitter kola, as phytochemical components with possible therapeutic benefits for diabetes and other diseases, are believed to be an essential source of colavirons and flavonoids. Bitter kola has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, molluscular, anti-atherogenic, antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties, and in medical conditions, like diabetes, should not be fully overlooked. The serum glucose concentration of treated diabetic rats was significantly decreased in our published work (P > 0.05) relative to the serum glucose concentration of untreated diabetic rats and controls. Decreased serum glucose and lipid profile concentrations are parameters attributed to the anti-diabetic and anti-hyperlipidemic activity of the extract of bitter kola seeds. The decreased glucose concentration may be attributed to the inflammation-fighting action of bitter kola seed extract and free radical reactive oxygen species (ROS) on the pancreatic beta cells. This chapter is useful for researchers interested in authenticating a secret truth about bitter kola, which has not been scientifically validated, especially with regard to diabetes.
