Determination and Assessment of Levels of Gaseous Air Pollutants Emitted at Ajakanga Dumpsite, Ibadan, Nigeria

There have been records of urban solid waste dumpsites producing various kinds of air contaminants worldwide. The accumulation of air contaminants released from urban solid waste such as CO, H2S, NH3, NOx and SO2 on the leaves of plants growing near dumpsites has detrimental effects on their morphological, physiological and biochemical properties. There is a need for daily atmospheric monitoring of their levels. In this analysis, uv/visible spectrophotometry was used to calculate the concentrations of three gaseous air pollutants (SO2, NOx and NH3) released from municipal solid waste and the effect of these gaseous air pollutants on the ascorbic acid content of Chromolaena odorata tissue collected at Ajakanga dumpsite, Ibadan, Nigeria. In air samples collected at the dumpsite, the concentration levels obtained for SO2, NOx and NH3 were 255.86–503.66 μg/m3; 246.67–1,155.79 μg/m3 and 777.51–1,852.48 μg/m3 respectively. The findings of this study showed that the atmosphere of the dumpsite was improved by gaseous air contamination with the three air quality monitoring parameters examined (i.e. SO2, NOx and NH3). The rising order at the dumping site of gaseous air contaminants is SO2 < NOx < NH3. Enhanced reduction in the quality of C ascorbic acid. Odorata was observed naturally rising in the vicinity of the Ajakanga dumpsite compared to the Ajakanga dumpsite control site.
