Ebook Boundaries: The Risk of Transfiguration a Digital Book into a Non-Book

June 21, 2021 Science and Technology 0

The study investigates the hypothesis that ebooks lose the characteristics of a “book” as a communication medium, transforming them into “non-books.” Two hypotheses have been tested: for the failure conditions of the commercial (paid) ebook, and for the failure conditions of the ebook in the sense of “book” as a scientific category. Symptoms of commercial ebook failure include: a lack of growth in the ebook market, the transformation of the book from a commodity to a service, free availability, and parental and reader resistance. The main reasons for this resistance are compromised knowledge and learning, as well as the violation of readers’ rights. Furthermore, the study identifies the reason for the ebook’s failure in the sense of “book” as a category, which is the ability to manipulate both its form and content. The conclusion is that investment policies should be geared toward print book publishing, while design innovations should be geared toward physical books and incorporated into paper and print.
