Effect of Shot Peening and Anodizing on Fatigue Crack Growth of Aircraft Material Al 7050-T7651: An Advance Study

The rate of fatigue fracture propagation of the 7050-T7651 aviation material after being subjected to an automatic shot peening machine and chromic acid anodizing (CAA) was investigated and compared to prior study findings. Shot peening is a surface treatment that involves firing shot material to create a dimple and residual stress on the working specimen’s surface in order to improve fatigue resistance. Al 7050-T7651 is produced into specimens that are treated with an automatic shot peening equipment (with steel shot material, 0.017 inch diameter, 30% shot flow, 3 bar pressure, etc.) according to ASTM E647 standard. In the surface treatment area of Indonesian Aerospace, Almen intensity 0.0082 A with 100 mm firing range and 90° angle of shot) and CAA (operation standard) were used. With a load of around 200 kg and a stress ratio of R = 0.1, the fatigue cracking test was performed. The fatigue crack growth test yielded a constant of Paris A=3.654 10-9 and n = 1.67, indicating that the automatic shot peening machine and chromic acid anodizing treatment reduced fatigue life and increased fatigue crack growth rate in comparison to the automatic shot peening machine, manual machine with or without CAA, and no treatment.
