Ensuring Structural Integrity via Non-destructive Testing for Developing Modular Refinery Shell

July 9, 2021 Engineering 0

The desire to develop reactors locally for various applications is growing. The shell of a modular refinery reactor, as well as its external components, were designed, built, and tested in this work. First, specifications for a conventional refinery reactor shell were obtained for the design, which were then scaled down to fit a modular refinery reactor. The design was completed in accordance with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Sections II and VIII of the Building and Plumbing Codes (BPVC). The modular refinery reactor was designed to refine 600 barrels of crude oil per batch. To ensure the structural integrity of the modular refinery reactor, two Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques, Radiographic Inspection and Liquid Penetrant Inspection, were used to analyze residual stresses on the fabricated reactor shell. Non-destructive testing techniques have been demonstrated to be reliable tools for investigating the structural integrity of welded vessels and structures. Thus, this paper demonstrates the local production and testing of a reactor shell, which will aid in the development and operation of nuclear power plants.
