Focusing on the Stresses of Coatings Based on a Solution of Expanded Polystyrene during Curing

Based on a solution of expanded polystyrene, the object of the paper is to determine the crack resistance of a coating. It is known that three phases pass through the process of curing polymer coatings. Intensive evaporation of the solvent happens at the first step of coating formation. In the second stage-after approximately 70% of the solvent has been evaporated, intensive growth of internal stresses starts. The concentration of the solvent is decreased in the third stage to a value close to equilibrium and its rate of evaporation reaches zero. Internal stresses are stabilised, with a maximum value reached. The application of 1-4 per cent (by volume) of a plasticizer induces a sharp decrease in internal stresses. It is known, with increasing polymer coating thickness, that internal stresses increase linearly. A mathematical model of the dependency on coating thickness of internal stresses is given.
