Intrauterine Fetal Demise – A Tragic Event: An Approach to its Epidemiology, Causes and Methods of Induction

Fetal death is a tragedy that brings enormous anguish to parents and caregivers. Although the majority of infants are healthy, something can go wrong and a baby can die while still in the womb. The researchers wanted to understand more about the prevalence, epidemiology, and causation of intrauterine foetal mortality. Misoprostol and dinoprostone’s efficacy as inducing agents in these cases should also be explored.

The patients’ demographic and clinical features were recorded. Inducing agents’ induction delivery intervals were compared.

The rate of IUFD was determined to be 50 per 1000 deliveries at our centre. Unbooked cases, primigravidas, and preterm with abruption were the most common causes, with a high prevalence in poor socioeconomic groups. Misoprostol was found to be more effective at terminating the pregnancy in these conditions. The induction delivery interval for misoprostol was 9.64 hours, while the induction delivery period for dinoprostone was 12.63 hours.

Conclusions: Many causes of intrauterine deaths can be averted with good antenatal care, such as abruption hypertensive diseases. Low socioeconomic position, teenage pregnancy, poor nutrition, and a lack of health education are all socio-demographic characteristics that should be recognised as predisposing factors for prenatal fatalities. Misoprostol is less expensive and has a shorter induction delivery interval; it is safe to use in cases of IUFD.
