Monitoring the Prevalence of Obesity and Knowledge of Health Risk Associated with Obesity among Female Adolescents in Jordan

Introduction: Health, both as a contributor to and a measure of sustainable growth, has become a more central concern in development. Overweight and obesity is a big worldwide health concern. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity among female adolescents in the Jordanian capital of Amman and to evaluate information on health risks associated with obesity. Method: A cross-sectional survey using a random sampling technique was performed on 782 female adolescents. Height and weight were measured and, based on International Obesity Task Force standers, body mass index for age was used to assess overweight and obesity. Scale 10 of obesity risk information was used to determine the degree of knowledge among female adolescents. Results: The prevalence of obesity and obesity among female adolescents was 34.9% and 12.5%, respectively. Obesity-related health risk awareness among female adolescents was limited.
