Pharmacological Activities of Ficus racemosa and Analysis of Its Major Bioactive Polyphenols by HPLC-DAD

Oxidative stress causes a variety of physiological disorders, including infectious diseases, inflammation, and cancer. The current study was carried out to investigate the antioxidant, antibacterial, and cytotoxic activity of methanol crude extracts of Ficus racemosa leaves and fruits (LCME and FCME, respectively) and to analyze its major bioactive polyphenols using HPLC-DAD. F. racemosa is used in traditional medicine in the subcontinent to treat a wide range of diseases. Methods: DPPH free radical scavenging, reducing power, total phenolic, total flavonoid, total tannin content assay, superoxide radical, hydroxyl radical, and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assays were used to assess the antioxidant capacity of the extracts. The HPLC-DAD method was used to identify and quantify bioactive polyphenols. The antibacterial activity was evaluated using the “disc diffusion” method. To determine the cytotoxic potential, a brine shrimp lethality assay was performed. Conclusion: Gallic acid, along with other phenolic constituents, may have played a significant role in the observed antioxidant, antibacterial, and cytotoxic activity.
