Hobbes and Spinoza form an intriguing and fascinating pair through political thinking. They lived parallel lives and wrote a lot on similar topics: individuals, contracts, religion and the state. While Hobbes is considered to be one of the top political theorists, due to his ethics, Spinoza was only known as a great philosopher. But I venture to suggest, on close inspection, that Spinoza still outperforms Hobbes in political philosophy and religion. The aim of this essay is to call for a re-evaluation of the political and religious theory of Spinoza.
