Taxonomic Keys of Mayflies in the Palni and Cardamom Hills of Western Ghats, Southern India

March 3, 2021 BIOLOGY 0

This chapter contains a key to ephemeropteran nymphs from the Palni and Cardamom hills of the Western Ghats in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, which belong to eight families, 30 genera, and 48 species. A total of 30 sites were sampled. In contrast to Ephemeridae and Ephemerellidae, the diversity of Baetidae and Leptophlebiidae was higher. Ephemera (Aethephemera) nadinae, Klugephlebia kodai, and Indoganodes jobini are mayflies that are only present in the Palni and Cardamom hills. This study will serve as a taxonomic primer for potential studies on mayfly taxonomy, genetics, biogeography, and ecology, as well as assisting biomonitoring programmes.
